Shillong, Dec 14: The North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMU) has ended its ban on petroleum supply to Meghalaya after a crucial meeting with state government officials at Circuit House in Nongpoh on Thursday.
The focus of the meeting was to address the union’s demand for the unconditional release of its arrested members by Meghalaya Police, who were detained due to suspected oil pilferage and alleged malpractices by suppliers to petrol pumps in Ri Bhoi district.
After the meeting, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, Peter Passah, shared the positive outcome. The government assured a thorough examination of raised concerns and committed to resolving them promptly. Passah clarified that the union’s demand for the release of its members falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court, emphasizing the government’s adherence to legal process.
The union had previously urged the government to release its detained members, setting a deadline for petroleum supply cessation by December 12, if their demand remained unfulfilled. Subsequently, Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister, Comingone Ymbon, convened a high-level meeting in response to this situation.
