Shillong, Jan 18: The Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, RM Kurbah, has requested the Voice of the People Party (VPP) party to refrain from holding their proposed sit-in-demonstration in front of the secretariat in view of the 71st plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong on Friday.
The plenary session of the NEC will be chaired by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and will be attended by MoS DoNER, Governors and CMs of all North East states.
The DC in her letter also reminded vide order dated January 12, 2024, a prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC is invoked prohibiting rally or demonstration of any kind within 200 meters of the main secretariat building, additional secretariat and Raj Bhavan.
She further said that the plenary session of the Ministry of DoNER is a regional programme which allows the Government of India to make important policies for the development of the North Eastern region as a whole. “As such, it is incumbent upon the people of Meghalaya to ensure that peace and tranquillity exist since such programmes and events convey a message of stability and progressiveness of the state. As a peace loving community known for its hospitality, any kind of demonstration at this juncture will poorly reflect on all of us,” she added.
However, the VPP has decided to go ahead with its decision to hold a sit-in-demonstration in front of the main secretariat on Friday, to pressurize the state government to reinstate the removed officials of the Lokayukta.
This was announced by VPP general secretary Ricky AJ Syngkon on Thursday, in response to the DC’s letter.
