Shillong, Jan 7: Meghalaya Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang affirmed on Tuesday that negotiations with the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) remain open, despite a temporary pause in discussions.
“At one point, HNLC was very keen to continue with the discussions,” Wahlang said. “However, there were tricky points from both their side and ours, and we couldn’t reach a point of convergence. We requested them to return, have a proper discussion among themselves, and come back when there is complete clarity and a common ground for convergence.”
While the HNLC has held internal meetings since then, Wahlang noted that they have not yet returned to resume talks. “We are waiting. Our doors are open, and that is the most important thing,” he emphasized.
The Chief Secretary underlined that while the government is open to dialogue, certain issues remain non-negotiable, particularly those involving the Ministry of Home Affairs. “There are some non-negotiable items, and on those, we cannot compromise. Other issues, however, remain negotiable,” he said.
Reflecting on the state’s law and order situation, Wahlang described 2024 as a relatively peaceful year. “We didn’t have any major issues, and everything was under control,” he said, noting that stability has allowed developmental activities to progress smoothly.
“A good law and order situation benefits the government’s developmental agenda and ultimately the citizens of the state,” he added.
Looking ahead, Wahlang expressed optimism for 2025, emphasizing the importance of sustained peace and progress for Meghalaya’s development. “We hope the peaceful atmosphere continues, as it is essential for advancing the welfare of the people and the state’s overall growth,” he said.
