Shillong, August 12: The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Friday said it may face constraints in terms of its capacity to admit students for the academic years 2026-27.
“It’s important to note that NEHU, being a central university, might face constraints in terms of its capacity to admit students for the academic years 2026 or 2027,” NEHU PRO Dr Davidson Pyngrope said in a statement issued here.
“This potential limitation arises if the central government issues a directive for the University to align its student admission criteria with the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020,” he said.
The statement said the Vice-Chancellor’s earlier communications stressed the potential repercussions of a policy implementation delay on the eligibility of state youth aiming to enrol in other central universities in 2026.
Additionally, NEHU’s ability to admit students for the specified years could be influenced by directives to conform to the admission standards outlined in the NEP 2020.
These points underscore the need for timely policy implementation and alignment to ensure smooth academic transitions for aspiring students, it said.
The statement also said that the vice chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla had conducted a meeting with the principals of various colleges wherein a significant majority—approximately 90%— of the principals expressed their support to the University’s decision to implement the NEP 2020.
It said that the VC had made it clear that no college principal has communicated to the University expressing their unpreparedness to adopt the NEP 2020.
The University remains committed to the successful implementation of the NEP 2020 in alignment with its academic and institutional objectives.
“In the event that a change in consensus among the colleges does occur, the Vice-Chancellor stated that the University would consider accommodating the concerns of those institutions. It is important to highlight that this statement was made within a hypothetical context and does not reflect an actual intent to reverse the decision,” the statement said.
The University also believes that it is paramount to present a balanced perspective and ensure accurate representation of the University’s stance on matters of educational policy. The University is wholeheartedly dedicated to promoting academic excellence and ensuring a seamless transition to the NEP 2020 from 2023-24 session itself for the betterment of the students and the entire educational community.
The statement said that the Vice-Chancellor emphasized a crucial point regarding the implementation timeline of a certain policy. The key message conveyed was that any potential delay in executing this policy could have significant implications for the eligibility of state youth who aspire to pursue their studies in other central universities in the year 2026.
