Shillong, June 7: The All NEHU Workers’ Union (ANWU), who has been protesting for almost two weeks, on Tuesday announced that the Union will stage a hunger strike from Wednesday (June 8) following no response from the Vice Chancellor to address their demands.
On speaking to reporters here, ANWU president Napoleon Mawphniang said the union had submitted its demand to the Vice Chancellor (VC) seeking the regularisation of services of the casual workers on the grounds that many of them have been working for 10 to 30 years. He said that the VC is yet to respond to their demands and all they want is a written reply whether he can or not fulfil their demand.
Mentionably, the ANWU on May 21 staged a silent protest demanding regularisation of their services. More than 500 workers gathered outside NEHU’s gate, hoping for an audience with the Union Education Minister and to put forth their demands.
According to Mawphniang, the union had on April 29 submitted a list of demands to the VC of NEHU and had served a 30-day deadline to the authorities to regularise the casual workers who have been working in the university for over 10 years.
