Shillong, Oct 31: In an unprecedented move, the Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising of NEHUTA, NEHUSU and NEHUNSA, on Tuesday forced Rohit Prasad, a contractual technical officer/senior consultant employed by the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), to vacate his office at the main campus in Mawlai’s Umshing – Mawkynroh as they amped up their protest against the varsity’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla.
Prior to that, they also stormed the venue of Academic Council meeting and launched the non-cooperation movement by boycotting the 111th Academic Council meeting.
Initially, JAC members gathered at the multi-Use Convention Hall, the designated venue for the academic council meeting. Upon learning that the Vice-Chancellor had relocated the meeting to his office’s conference room, they organized a procession from the convention hall to the VC’s office.
At the VC’s premises, JAC members entered the office to request those inside to join the Academic Council meeting, as they were scheduled to hold their General Assembly outside. Most members complied, but one professor declined, leading the JAC to condemn his decision for aligning with the VC’s alleged wrongdoings.
Following this, the General Assembly meeting of the JAC leaders highlighted various alleged irregularities and illegalities attributed to the VC. This action was taken due to the VC’s failure to meet the deadline for the removal of the alleged “illegally appointed” contractual technical officer/senior consultant, Rohit Prasad, by midnight on October 26, 2023.
JAC Chairman, Prof Lakhon Kma, emphasized that the VC was expected to address the JAC’s demands promptly, not solely regarding the removal of Prasad. These demands encompassed the immediate appointment of statutory officers, a university engineer, and the director of the CDC.
Kma noted that the VC neither accepted the deadline for Prasad’s removal nor initiated any measures to address the longstanding concerns of the three NEHU associations.
Later, the JAC, led by NEHUTA president Prof Lakhon Kma, forced Rohit Prasad to vacate his office and subsequently locked it. The JAC alleged that Rohit Prasad’s appointment was illegal, and they took this action against him for occupying the office in an unauthorized manner.
