NEHU-NIELIT commence ‘IT Skill course’ for students, target 1.6 lakh citizens across NE

Shillong, Sept 11: North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in collaboration with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), both based in Shillong, have initiated an “IT education and skill development” project that aims to equip 1.665 lakh citizens from diverse sections of society across the north-eastern states with vital IT skills and make them more employable.

In line towards achieving this target, the pre-final and final year B.Tech students of the Biomedical Engineering students of NEHU are undergoing a capacity-building course on “Programming Technologies”, which will equip them with necessary skills to meet tech industry standards.

More than 40 students have enrolled for the course which began on September 9 and would continue for a fortnight. This course is free for the B.Tech students.

According to officials, the “course will equip students with the skills necessary to meet industry standards, making them job-ready for various roles in the rapidly evolving tech landscape”.

NEHU’s Department of Biomedical Engineering Head, Prof SS Ray, emphasised on the importance of such skill development courses and these courses could help the future generations in getting skilled and getting more employment opportunities.

Officer in-charge, NIELIT, Santanu Borgohain informed the participants about different skill development courses being offered by NIELIT and how it could possibly be incorporated with the new National Education Policy based course curriculum of the University.

Imparting skills sets though this course falls under category-3 of the project “capacity building in Information Electronics and Communication Technology, including training in digital skill sets and current Industry demanding technologies for various sections of society in the NE states”.

This project is designed to uplift the socio-economic status of citizens in the region by fostering a smart ecosystem with vital IT education and skill development.
