Shillong, Jan 23: The North Eastern Hill University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) on Thursday sought the intervention of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to extend statutory powers to the Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) of the university.
“We have appealed to the Union Minister to extend special statutory powers to the Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) for recruiting the advertised posts for non-teaching staff. Taking into account the delay in resolving the present crisis in the university, NEHUNSA stated that it would be highly obliged if the request is granted,” the president of the association, Dr. W.R. Synrem, said in a statement.
Dr. Synrem added that the association has also urged the Union Minister to intervene at the earliest to resolve the ongoing crisis within the university.
“As the regular Vice-Chancellor has gone on leave due to the prevailing situation, the senior-most professor is currently overseeing the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, as per NEHU Acts and Statutes,” he said.
He pointed out that the Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) has limited powers to manage the university’s overall affairs, resulting in a stalemate, especially regarding the recruitment of staff for the advertised posts.
Dr. Synrem further informed that the number of regular staff members is rapidly declining, with more than 50 staff retiring annually on average.
“It was emphasized to the Union Minister of Education that if recruitment is not carried out soon, the university’s administration will likely come to a standstill,” he concluded.
