NEHU student unions urge non-teaching staff to defy VC, Registrar’s orders

Must read

Shillong, March 23: The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), NEHU Unit, have asked the non-teaching staff to defy all directions issued by the Vice Chancellor Prof PS Shukla and registrar Col Omkar Singh.

In a letter to the North-Eastern Hill University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) recently, the NEHUSU and KSU said, “We write to formally request your esteemed Association and the broader non-teaching fraternity to refrain from complying with any direction(s), order(s), meeting(s), decision(s) or instruction(s) issued by Prof. P. S. Shukla and Col. Omkar Singh.”

They alleged that these individuals have maliciously attempted to resume their duties while not being present in-station and have issued orders and duties from locations outside the jurisdiction of the University Acts and Statutes, which constitutes a violation of Section 6 (1) of the NEHU Act, 1973.

“Prof. P. S. Shukla has been on continuous leave for 127 days and has failed to discharge his duties since 15.11.2024. His claim to resume duties via an online mode from Delhi is arbitrary, unsubstantiated, and against the established rules and regulations of our university. It is essential to highlight that there is no provision in the university’s rules or regulations that allows for resumption of duties remotely. This unauthorized action of Prof. P. S. Shukla is unacceptable and must be condemned, as it sets a dangerous precedent for the future governance of the University. Such actions should not be accepted nor encouraged,” they said adding “Furthermore, Col. Omkar Singh has failed to report back to the university since his leave commenced, and any actions, directions, or orders issued by Col. Omkar Singh is being regarded as invalid and unacceptable to the students’ community at large.”

The two student bodies also reiterated their firm stance that neither Prof. P. S. Shukla nor Col. Omkar Singh can be considered legitimate members of our university community. “The persona non grata status that has been assigned to them by various civil organizations and the local community of our state continues to be endorsed by the students of the University, and we too consider them persona non grata,” they wrote.

“We urge that any faculty members who choose to disregard this request and act in opposition to the position of the students’ community will be regarded as acting in contradiction to the interests and welfare of the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Community,” they further added.
