Shillong, April 11: With Prof. Sherwin M. Sungoh assuming charge as the Vice Chancellor in-charge of the North Eastern Hill University, two statutory bodies of the university – North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) and Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) – have announced their full support to her.
After a joint meeting of the NEHUTA and NEHUNSA on Friday afternoon, both the statutory bodies welcomed Prof. Sungoh’s decision to resign from her position as Pro Vice Chancellor of the Shillong Campus and assuming the role of Acting Vice Chancellor by virtue of being the next senior-most professor, as per Statute 2(A)(5)(i) of the University.

NEHUTA President Prof. Lakhon Kma said the associations would back Prof. Sungoh in fulfilling her responsibilities in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s directives.
He also informed that Prof. Sungoh, as the acting VC, has all the powers of a regular VC except for making regular appointment – both teaching and non-teaching staff.
“So, we do hope that with this, things are going to be normal in this university, atleast in the immediate future. If, god willing, we will get what we desire; eventually we might have a very good VC, but that is for the future,” Prof Kma said.

However, he also clarified that no corresponded has been received from the Ministry of Education on Prof. Sungoh assuming charge as Vice Chancellor in-charge even though the letter was sent on April 9, 2025. In her letter to the Ministry, Prof. Sungoh said that considering the prevailing situation in the University and demands of the stakeholders, it has been difficult for her to function as Pro-Vice Chancellor under extreme pressure. She said the School Board meetings of the University are already over and the recommendations are awaiting approval of the Academic Council/Executive Council which she is not in a position to convene.
“In the given circumstances stated above, I prefer to tender my resignation from the post of Pro Vice Chancellor and will function as the Vice-Chancellor (In-charge) by virtue of being the next senior most professor, as per Status 2(A)(5)(i) of the University, with adequate administrative and financial power, with immediate effect,” she wrote.

Meanwhile, Prof. Kma announced that the VC in-charge can approve CAS, convene finance committee meeting, academic council meeting, executive council meeting, and even make temporary appoints including appointment of a Pro VC.
He added that the acting VC cannot amend the University’s Act, Statutes, Regulations, or Ordinances.
However, Prof. Sungoh was not present in the Shillong campus on Friday due to official commitments in Tura.
At the same time, he also asked Dr. Fameline K. Marak to resign as Pro VC of NEHU’s Tura campus.
