NEHU, Tura campus celebrates World Environment Day with plantation of 400 saplings

Tura, June 5: The North-Eastern Hill University, Tura celebrated the World Environment Day in unison with the theme for this year, “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience, on Wednesday.

Themed by the slogan ‘Green Earth, Clean Earth’, it was jointly organised by Department of Forestry and Department of Horticulture, NEHU Tura campus.

A plantation program was organised, where dignitaries along with the students took part and planted around 400 saplings throughout the campus to commemorate the day.

Present at the occasion were, Prof. P. S. Shukla, Vice Chancellor, NEHU as the chief guest; Jagdish Chellani, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills; Malay Sagar Jha, IFS, Assistant Conservator of Forest, West, South & South West Garo Hills Division; Prof. J. U. Ahmed, I/C Campus Director, NEHU; Dr. G Kadrivel, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Guwahati; Chaitanya Awasthi, Asst. Commissioner (U/T), Tura, West Garo Hills along with other head of the departments and students of NEHU, Tura campus.

The program was held in order to raise awareness among the students about environmental conservation and to inspire them to plant more trees to help stop deforestation.

Chellani, in his address, urged the students and the institution to minimize the usage of plastics in the campus, implying that his office has also started to adopt the initiative. He also talked about the effects that Jhum cultivation and population pressure has in land degradation. He added that the administration is now incentivizing farmers at 8000 rupees per acre to save the green resources on top of their lands, with the idea that they get paid for the management of important natural resources under them.

Prof. P. S. Shukla, in his address promised to strive for a plastic free campus and ideated about planting a sapling through the department of forestry during any campus celebrations. Adding, that such initiatives can help boost the ecosystem for the future.

Program also witnessed prize distribution for the essay competition held in the campus previously, to motivate the participants to be environment friendly in their lives, around 40 essays were submitted on the theme of the world environment day.
