Williamnagar, March 19: The Sacred Heart Church in Williamnagar was officially inaugurated and consecrated in a grand ceremony presided over by Bishop of Tura, Rev. Andrew R. Marak, alongside Auxiliary Bishop, Rev. Jose Chirackal on Wednesday.
The sacred occasion was attended by local MLA and PHE Minister, Marcuise N. Marak, MSCPCR chairperson and former Tura MP, Agatha K Sangma, former Songsak MLA and co-chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board, Nihim D Shira, priests from across the Garo Hills region, religious dignitaries, and a large congregation of the faithful.
The Holy Mass was the central highlight of the event, officiated by Bishop Andrew R. Marak, with the concelebrating priests joining in the sacred liturgy.
The newly constructed Sacred Heart Church was solemnly blessed and dedicated to God, following the rich traditions and liturgical rites of the Catholic Church. The congregation witnessed the order of service with prayers, scripture readings, and blessings, reinforcing the sanctity of the newly established place of worship.
Following the Holy Mass, a cultural program was organized to commemorate the joyous occasion. During the event, Bishop Andrew R. Marak, Auxiliary Bishop Jose Chirackal, PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak, MDC of Williamnagar Alphonsus R. Marak, and other dignitaries were felicitated for their contributions and support toward the church.
The Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Church, Fr. Anthony Tekanath, delivered the welcome address, extending his heartfelt gratitude to Bishop Andrew R. Marak for his continuous guidance and support. He also acknowledged the contributions of Auxiliary Bishop Jose Chirackal, whose expertise in construction played a crucial role in bringing the church to completion. Further appreciation was extended to Local MLA and PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak for his continuous support and local businessman Georgemon S. Marak for his generous contributions.

Speaking at the event, Minister Marcuise Marak expressed his deep joy and gratitude for the establishment of this sacred structure. He thanked the bishops for blessing the occasion and commended the efforts of the parish priest, church leaders, and the faithful for their dedication in bringing this vision to life.
Sharing his joy in being part of this historic inaugural ceremony, Rev. Jose Chirackal reminded the congregation of the true purpose of a church and remarked “this church must not become like the large, empty churches in Europe. It should always be filled with believers, now and for generations to come.”
In his address, Bishop Andrew R. Marak noted the significant growth in the number of Catholic families in Williamnagar, which led to the construction of this larger church. “If this growth continues, we may need an even bigger church in the future, or we will have to increase the number of priests to conduct multiple Masses daily,” he said. He urged the faithful to attend church regularly, strengthen their faith, and carry forward the mission of Christ.
As a mark of appreciation, mementos were presented to dignitaries, senior parishioners, and individuals who played key roles in the realization of Sacred Heart Church.
The inauguration of Sacred Heart Church, Williamnagar, East Garo Hills stands as a testament to the enduring faith and unity of the Catholic community, signifying a new chapter in the spiritual journey for the region.
