Guwahati, February 19: National Fertilizers Limited (NFL), a Government of India undertaking, has announced its decision to participate in a joint venture to establish the Namrup IV Fertilizer Plant in Assam. The decision was taken during a Board of Directors meeting held on Wednesday, February 19.
According to an official statement, the NFL will hold an 18% equity stake in the joint venture, which aims to set up a state-of-the-art Ammonia-Urea Complex at Namrup, Assam. The project is expected to bolster the fertilizer industry in the region and contribute to agricultural growth by ensuring a steady supply of urea to farmers.

The Union Budget 2025-26 had announced the setting up of a new urea plant in Namrup. This plant will produce 12.7 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of urea every year, giving a major boost to local farmers who rely on fertilizers for their crops. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said this urea facility will be a game changer for the entire North East. “It will not only help us achieve self-sufficiency in fertilizer availability but also better channelise our natural gas resources” he stated.
The Department of Fertilizers, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India, is spearheading the initiative. The estimated completion timeline for the mechanical setup and commissioning of the plant is approximately 48 months from the zero date.
This investment aligns with the government’s broader goal of strengthening domestic fertilizer production and reducing dependence on imports. The establishment of Namrup IV is expected to create significant employment opportunities in Assam and boost regional economic development.
The financial details, including the cost of acquisition and share price, are yet to be disclosed. However, the joint venture is anticipated to enhance self-sufficiency in fertilizer production and support India’s agricultural sector.
NFL, a Navratna company, has been a key player in India’s fertilizer industry and with this new investment, it continues its commitment to modernizing the sector and supporting the nation’s farmers.
