Aizawl, Jan 22: NGOs and political parties across Mizoram have expressed strong opposition to the State Government’s decision to hand over Lengpui Airport to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The move follows a cabinet decision made on October 16, 2024, to transfer operational responsibilities.

TBC Lalvenchhunga, Chairman of the Working Committee on Lengpui Airport and Advisor to the Chief Minister (Finance & Planning) announced that the committee is currently drafting a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to formalize the arrangement.

Under the proposed terms, the IAF will take charge of runway maintenance and technical operations, including air traffic control (ATC), while the State Government will retain control over the remaining facilities and services.

As per the “Terms of Reference” set by the State Government, the Working Committee has been tasked with negotiating the terms with the IAF, preparing a draft MoA, and submitting a report within three months.

The NGO Coordination Committee, an umbrella organization representing key civil society groups like CYMA, MHIP, MUP, MZP, and MSU, condemned the proposal in a statement issued on August 9, 2024.

“We strongly oppose the plan to hand over Mizoram’s most valuable resource, the Lengpui Airport, to the IAF,” the statement read.

Political parties, including the Mizo National Front and the Congress, have also criticized the decision, fueling widespread debate and controversy over the airport’s future.
