Shillong, June 18: The District Commission of East Jaintia Hills on Sunday said that after opening the traffic through the Sonapur (Sonapyrdi) tunnel for around 5-6 hours at the night, the road was closed again due to the continuous mudflow near the tunnel.
Earlier, East Jaintia Hills Police shared National Highway-NH06 update on Sunday, it said that one side of the Sonapur (Sonapyrdi ) Tunnel is open for traffic.
It further said that “with more rain forecasted for the next 24 hours, there is every likelihood of more mudslides in the area which may again block the road near the Tunnel.”
In the update, it also advised the commuters to avoid travelling through this stretch of the Highway unless very necessary. The advisory, it also asked in such cases, people must make sure to carry sufficient food and portable water.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway by NHAI to clear the road.
