Gangtok, May 14: The crucial NH10 — the arterial route linking Sikkim and West Bengal’s Kalimpong with Siliguri — will remain closed for nine hours on alternate days starting May 15, as authorities undertake much-needed repair work.
The affected 52km Sevoke-Rangpo stretch lies entirely within Bengal but serves as the primary gateway to the Himalayan state of Sikkim. Responsibility for maintaining this fragile corridor was recently handed over from the state government to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), following repeated damage and delays in repair work.

Unlike earlier intermittent blockades, the NHIDCL has now called for a full nine-hour closure on three alternate days to accelerate the repair process.
“This road is very important for us. It’s the lifeline that connects us with the plains. But now, for repairs, we’ll have to bear the brunt,” said a local resident from the Rangpo area.
The NH10 corridor is notoriously vulnerable to landslides, cave-ins, and weather-induced blockages, especially during the monsoon months. Disruptions force both locals and tourists to rely on long detours that can take twice as long, often through less reliable hill roads.
Authorities have not yet announced official detour routes, leaving commuters bracing for travel delays and uncertainty in the days ahead.
