Shillong, March 25: A Craft Bazaar, dedicated to showcasing the diverse and vibrant traditional crafts of North East India, was inaugurated at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Shillong today.
The opening ceremony was graced by N. Munish Singh, Regional Director of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), alongside Shankar Kumar Jha, Director of NIFT Shillong.
In his welcome address, Mr. Jha emphasized the significance of the Craft Bazaar in promoting indigenous craftsmanship. “NIFT Shillong is committed to preserving and promoting the traditional craftsmanship of this region. Our Craft Bazaar provides a platform for artisans from across the Northeast to showcase their unique creations, interact with designers and consumers, and explore market opportunities. This year, we have invited around 25 artisans to participate in the event,” he stated.
N. Munish Singh lauded the institute’s efforts in supporting the craft sector and urged artisans to focus on quality, innovation, and market demand. “It is heartening to see the rich cultural heritage of North East India’s traditional crafts being showcased here. I urge the artisans to leverage this platform to expand their businesses and reach new markets,” he remarked. Encouraging students to blend tradition with modernity, he added, “Move ahead while taking along the past. The North East is a sea of opportunities due to its diverse cultures. Certain attires and motifs are deeply rooted in culture, religious beliefs, and the simple lives of the people.”
Highlighting ICCR’s commitment to promoting North East crafts globally, Mr. Singh expressed enthusiasm in collaborating with NIFT Shillong for expanding craft and design opportunities abroad. “Fashion, dance, and food always go hand in hand, and ICCR is ready to take the step forward,” he affirmed.
The Craft Bazaar features an impressive display of handcrafted products, representing the unique artistic expressions of different communities across the region. The event aims to support local artisans and small enterprises, promote sustainable and eco-friendly products, and create new avenues for cultural preservation and economic growth.
Open to the public, the event will conclude on March 26, 2025.
