Guwahati, Nov 23: Assam police have arrested nine individuals for brutally attacking a Royal Bengal tigress with stones and sticks, leaving the animal nearly blind.
The incident occurred in Nagaon district, central Assam, after the tigress strayed from the Kamakhya Reserve Forest into human habitation. The big cat was pelted with stones and bricks while attempting to cross the Kolong River.
Following a complaint lodged by a forest ranger, police detained and later arrested the individuals under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Videos shared by the ranger helped identify the culprits, according to officials.
The three-year-old tigress, injured and disoriented, was rescued near a railway bridge on November 20 and transported to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation near Kaziranga National Park for treatment.
The animal had first strayed into the area on the morning of November 18, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS Act in the nearby villages of Debasatra and Miribheti to safeguard both residents and wildlife.
“A case has been registered, and legal action is underway against the individuals involved,” said an official.
