Shillong, May 25: In a pioneering effort, NIT Meghalaya has opened a Computer Training Center at its temporary campus in Bijni Complex, Laitumkhrah, Shillong, specifically for the visually impaired. This initiative, launched on May 22, 2024, aims to enhance the livelihood of visually impaired individuals. In Meghalaya, there are approximately 2,300 visually impaired people.
The center was inaugurated by Mrs. Maya Alag and Shri Sunil Alagh, Chairman of the Board of Governors, NIT Meghalaya. The event was attended by the Director of NIT Meghalaya, Prof. Pinakeswar Mahanta, along with deans, professors, faculty, and staff members. The center was developed by a team led by Dr. Bunil Kumar Balabantaray, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Also present at the event were members of the Blind Lead Trust, including Co-Founder and Managing Director Mr. Jitendra Dkhar, Secretary Ms. Bandwina Khymdeit, and Trustees Mr. Kanai Debnath and Mr. Kamdathmu Langstang.
The training center will provide visually impaired individuals with basic training in Microsoft Office, Excel, document writing, web browsing, and social media. The course will last for two months, and the first batch will admit 10 people, who will receive certificates from NIT Meghalaya upon completion. Additionally, NIT Meghalaya plans to develop a special skill development center at its main campus in Shora to further support the livelihood of differently-abled individuals.
