Silchar, March 22: An assistant professor from the Electrical Engineering Department at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar was arrested on Friday in connection with an alleged incident of sexual harassment.
According to police officials, two First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed – one by the female student who made the complaint, and another by her family members.
“He initially attempted to evade arrest by locking his quarters from the outside, but we tracked his mobile phone location and detained him around 5:30 p.m.,” a police official said.

Cachar Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta confirmed that the accused, identified as Assistant Professor Dhenukonda, was first detained and later arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Earlier in the day, NIT Silchar Director Prof. Dilip Kumar Baidya chaired a high-level meeting regarding the matter, alongside Registrar Ashim Roy. In a joint statement issued afterward, the administration stated that normalcy has been restored on campus, although class attendance was lower due to overnight student protests.
“Students protested until around 4 a.m., which affected attendance today (Friday). However, the situation is now under control,” Prof. Baidya said.

Registrar Roy confirmed the institute had received a complaint of sexual harassment from a female student and that the matter is being taken seriously. “We have suspended the faculty member under the Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1964 after preliminary inquiry. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) is conducting a detailed investigation,” he said.
He added that the departmental chamber where the alleged incident occurred has been sealed, and all necessary support is being provided to the complainant. “The case was immediately forwarded to the ICC, and the safety and well-being of the student remain our top priority,” Roy said.
