Shillong, April 24: The State government on Thursday announced that no commercial structure will be built near the war memorial or Cenotaph in the Garo Hills.
This announcement is significant, as there had been strong opposition to the government’s earlier plan to reconstruct the memorial without consulting stakeholders. There were also concerns over reports suggesting that a commercial structure might be constructed alongside the memorial.

Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak, who also heads the 28-member committee for the preservation of Garo culture and heritage, clarified that the site will remain solely a war memorial, with no commercial development.
He informed that all stakeholders are now on board with the plan. There have also been requests to include names that were previously left out of the memorial. The minister assured that efforts will be made to identify and include these names after proper research.
Two possible locations have been suggested for additional memorial structures—the old Circuit House and a public school, both situated close to the Cenotaph. If more names are to be added, a new structure may be built at one of these sites to honor them.
