No more back-breaking journeys for students as Gambegre finally get a MBOSE exam centre

Must read

Shillong, July 5: In a huge relief to hundreds of students of Gambegre, who earlier had to travel all the way to either Tura or Dalu for board exams, the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) has granted provisional affiliation to one of the schools in the area, in which the students can now write their board exams.

The MBOSE has given provisional affiliation to Kherapara Secondary School, Kherapara, in West Garo Hills. The school has been given the provisional affiliation for class IX and X, with effect from July 4, 2024. The affiliation is for 3 years, subject to certain criteria laid down.

The conditions include paying processing fee of Rs 3000, affiliation free of Rs 6000, and certificate fee of Rs 3000. Besides this, the school needs to ensure that it cannot have minimum average pass percentage below 50 percent for 3 consecutive years. It also must pay annual renewal fee by December 15th. There are several other criteria that need to be meet.

An MBOSE examination centre in Gambegre was a long pending demand, since the students had to travel odd 16 kms to Tura to sit for board exams, and sometimes even to Dalu, which is over 35 kms.

While 35 kms may not sound much but given the terrible condition of the road and lack of proper transportation, the back-breaking journey is well over an hour. During exams, when the students are already stressed, the long and tiring journey becomes an added headache for them.

Last week, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma held a meeting with MBOSE and Education Department to speed up the process to finding a school in the area to address the major worry for the students and parents.

With the affiliation to Kherapara Secondary School, the school will also become the MBOSE exam centre, thus brining huge relief to hundreds of students in Gambegre under West Garo Hills district.

Ecstatic over the latest development, local residents have welcomed the news calling it a “game-changer” for their children. “No more long journeys, no more stress. Our kids can now focus on their studies without worrying about the exam centre,” said one of the teachers.

Additionally, in case the school cannot accommodate the number of students in the constituency, the government may contemplate giving affiliations to more schools.
