Gangtok, July 10: Sikkim Assembly has been rendered opposition-less with the lone legislator of Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), Tenzing Norbu Lamtha, joining the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party. Lamtha joined SKM on Wednesday.
With his joining, as SKM has secured all the 32 seats in the north eastern state.
Lamtha was welcomed by CM Golay, who took his social media handle and wrote, “Having left the SDF Party, he (Lamtha) has officially joined our SKM family as the sole MLA of the SDF Party. During our discussion, he raised several commendable concerns related to the welfare of his constituency. I welcome his proposals to work collaboratively for the benefit of the entire Syari Constituency, aiming for the comprehensive development of the area and its people.”
Lamtha made a brief exit during the 2024 Assembly elections when he was denied ticket for Shyari constituency by SKM party in favour of Kunga Nima Lepcha, who was with the SKM party from 2019-24.
He quickly joined the SDF party, where he was given the SDF ticket from Shyari constituency. He secured 6,633 votes with a victory margin of 1,314 votes against SKM’s Kunga Nima Lepcha (5,319 votes). He had the highest vote count among all the SDF candidates, even more than SDF supremo Pawan Kumar Chamling, who contested in two constituencies.
Sikkim Assembly has 32 seats, with the results for the 2024 elections declared on June 2, 2024. The SKM, under its supremo Prem Singh Tamang, swept the elections, winning 31 of 32 seats. This is the second consecutive tenure as Chief Minister for Prem Singh Tamang, having first occupied the chair in 2019, when SKM unseated Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), ending the 25-year-rule of former CM Pawan Kumar Chamling in Sikkim.
