Guwahati, April 15: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday made it clear that his government will not permit any protest or street demonstration in the state against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
“If All Assam Minority Students’ Union( AAMSU) has a problem with the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, they should approach the Supreme Court,” Sarma told reporters. “If anyone has anything to say in its favour or against it, the court is the right forum. It will be properly discussed there by the judges.”

The Chief Minister emphasised that while individuals and organisations are free to have their opinions, no one will be allowed to create unrest in public spaces.
“I have nothing to say if someone supports or opposes the Act, but hitting the streets will not be allowed,” he said.
Responding to the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU), Sarma reminded them that support for the Act also exists. “We don’t want any conflict. Brotherhood must be maintained for Assam’s progress. That’s why people should be able to differentiate between good and bad,” he added.
His comments come days after police detained several protestors in central and western Assam as they were heading to Guwahati to demonstrate against the Act.
