No regrouping of GNLA in Garo Hills, assures Minister Marcuise Marak

Shillong, Feb 13: Williamnagar MLA and Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak has dismissed rumours about the alleged regrouping of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in Garo Hills, assuring that the situation remains peaceful and under control. He emphasized that significant development efforts and government initiatives have helped prevent youth from being misguided into militancy.

Reflecting on the past, Marak acknowledged that Williamnagar was once a hotbed of militancy, where many young people were misled. However, he highlighted that today’s youth are more educated and well-informed, with numerous government programs offering them better opportunities.

“Now, most of the youths are educated. From the government side, so many programs are there—CM Elevate, Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) programs, Focus, Focus Plus, and others. With the district administration and block development officers, we have conducted several awareness programs. Youths are now actively participating in the police recruitment process, and they see the transparency in it. They are motivated, practising early in the morning to compete in the physical tests,” said Marak.

He further explained that efforts have been made to help youth prepare for competitive exams, including District Selection Board exams, by offering training and guidance from experienced officers. “Many MCS and MPS officers are willing to guide these youths, especially in exam preparation and writing on OMR sheets. We are making sure they are equipped to succeed,” he added.

Regarding the rehabilitation of former GNLA cadres, Marak assured that most of them have successfully integrated into mainstream society with government assistance.

“Most of them are now settled one way or another through CM Elevate. Many have received support such as homestays, vehicles, or financial assistance. Some have registered as contractors, and I am also trying my best to provide them with work. Officers at the ground level are also helping. There are no disgruntled youths considering a return to militancy; they are all working hard to survive and improve their lives,” Marak stated.

Addressing reports circulating on social media about GNLA regrouping, Marak firmly denied any such development.

“There is no such news now. It was only rumored. In the past, when GNLA and the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) were active, road connectivity was poor. Back then, crossing the Simsang River was difficult, with no proper bridges. That gave militants an advantage. But now, every village is accessible with roads and bridges, even in the remotest parts. There is no chance of regrouping,” he asserted.

He also noted that villagers are no longer supportive of militancy and, if any suspicious activities were to arise, the government would quickly identify and address them.

Responding to concerns that some surrendered militants might not have received their rehabilitation packages, leading to frustration, Marak encouraged them to come forward and discuss their grievances.

“Whoever is not satisfied, let them come forward. There is no full stop on anything. We can discuss and find solutions. I have always been accessible to people and remain closely connected with the youth. So far, no one has raised such complaints,” he said.
