Shillong, April 10: The State Government on Thursday stated that there is no logical or valid reason to oppose Aadhaar registration, emphasizing that it is essential for proper implementation and monitoring of government schemes.
Cabinet Minister and MDA 2.0 spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said, “What is the valid ground to oppose? Nobody is being forced to register for Aadhaar. But it also means that those who choose not to register will not be entitled to certain government schemes. So, the choice is with the applicant.”

Defending the government’s stand on the matter, Lyngdoh added, “We have been saying that there are no sensible or logical grounds to oppose it. It’s like opposing a PAN card or a driving license. You can’t just oppose everything under the sun—there has to be a valid reason.”
He further explained that Aadhaar registration is not an unusual move and is in line with national policy. “We are not doing anything out of the ordinary. There are strict guidelines from various ministries of the Government of India that Aadhaar registration must be compulsory. Only then can the success rate and performance of government interventions and programmes be properly assessed,” he said.

Lyngdoh also pointed out the practical challenges of governance without a comprehensive database. “Without a database, how would the government know how many beneficiaries there are?” he asked.
Highlighting the delay in Aadhaar registration in the state, he said, “Let us also realise that it is purely a central subject. It would help us to create that database with the details of each cardholder. Also, Meghalaya is one of the few states that has not completed the Aadhaar registration process—most of the country completed it years ago.”
