North-East fish farmers honoured at 24th National Fish Farmers’ Day

Tura, July 10: Around 200 fish farmers joined in the celebration of the 24th National Fish Farmers’ Day from across the north-eastern region at the College of Fisheries, CAU (Imphal), on Wednesday, where the progressive fish famers from the region were honoured.

The event was organised in association with the North East Society for Fisheries and Aquaculture (NESFA), India.

This crucial day is celebrated in India in commemoration of the revolutionary “Induced Breeding Technology” developed by Dr. Hiralal Choudhury and Dr. K. H. Alikhuni on July 10, 1957, which went on to change the face of Indian aquaculture.

Progressive fish farmers, namely Rockson Kashung (Manipur), Khalainbor Pale (Meghalaya), Yeamoty Pigyor (Arunachal Pradesh), Da Norbu Sherpa (Sikkim), Ramdi Thou (Nagaland), Jaydev Sarkar (Assam), LALHMUNSANGA (Mizoram), and Sujit Das (Tripura) were awarded for their remarkable entrepreneurship contribution to different avenues of fisheries and aquaculture viz. Seed production, rearing, grow-out etc.

The Chief Guest of the programme, Dr. Ph. Ranjit Sharma, Director of Extension Education, CAU, Imphal graced the occasion and inaugurated the Exhibition cum Technology Showcasing. He applauded the college staff and students for their collective initiative.

Earlier, welcoming the gathering, Prof. A. B. Patel, Dean of the college, highlighted the significant contributions of the farmers towards the development of the fisheries sector as well as the role of the College of Fisheries in helping and supporting them.

The guests of the event also distributed fish seeds and other technology products to the fish farmers of Tripura.

A farmers-scientists workshop was also held on “Blue Transformation in North East India: Farmers’ Perspectives” witnessing wide participation from different sections.

Faculty and staff of the College of Community Science, Tura, Meghalaya, also attended the webcast of the 24th National Fish Farmer’s Day Celebration on Wednesday via virtual attendance.
