Dibrugarh, Aug 9: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has warned Centre that Northeast cannot be a dumping ground of illegal Bangladeshis.
AASU chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said the indigenous people of Northeastern region and Northeast Students’ Organisation (NESO) is very much concerned about the situation cropped up in Bangladesh. “When some incidents occurred in Bangladesh, the illegal influx and due to that the indigenous people of Northeast always suffers” he said.
“Since 1947 partition influx from East Pakistan has happened and in 1971 when Bangladesh was formed, we have witnessed influx of illegal Bangladeshis in the Northeast. The influx has been towards northeast which is a threat for the indigenous people. We have already seen this in Tripura out of 45 lakh population only 15 lakh are indigenous people. The indigenous people have become second class citizens in their own land,” Bhattacharya said.
He further said Assam, the historic Assam agitation where many people gave their lives and after that the Assam Accord was signed. The irony is that it still has not implemented and influx is still on in the state. Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have also been facing the same problem. There is a threat to the identity of the indigenous people in the Northeast which is a threat to the language, culture and everything” he said.
Bhattacharya said the apprehension is that the influx will be towards the northeastern region in the wake of Bangladesh unrest.
He said they have sent a memorandum to Prime Minister urging him not to give rehabilitation to the Bangladeshis in Northeastern states as Northeast is not a dumping ground for illegal Bangladeshis.
“We demand that border should be sealed because out of seven northeastern states, four states are mostly vulnerable,” the AASU chief advisor said.
