Guwahati, Feb 19: A notorious drug peddler was arrested with contraband items in Assam’s South Salmara Mankachar during a anti-narcotics operation on Tuesday.
The drug peddler has been identified as- Imdadul Islam (35) of Boro Kazirgaon village of South Salmara Mankachar.
Based on credible inputs regarding heroin peddling at Boro Kazirgaon under Sukchar police station, an anti-narcotics operation was launched under the leadership of Additional SP (Hq), South Salmara Mankachar, along with officer-incharge of Sukchar and Sukchar police station staff leading to the arrest of the drug peddler.
The seized items include 10.64 grams of suspected heroin in a soap case which was concealed inside a blue coloured ladies bag, one smartphone.
According to police, during the preliminary inquiry the accused admitted that he is involved in narcotics peddling.
He also revealed that he procured the heroin from another peddler based in Belbari under Phulbari Police station in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya.
The accused is currently in custody of police for further interrogation.
Meanwhile, FIR has been registered in connection with the case.
In another joint patrolling cum-area domination operation by South Salmara police, the patroling team have recovered narcotic items at Kalaichar-Masalabari area bordering Indo-Bangladesh.
During the patrolling, unknown miscreants were spotted loitering suspiciously at a distance. Upon approaching, they fled, abandoning certain items. A subsequent search was conducted in the area leading to the recovery of 7,200 Yaba tablets and 50 grams of suspected brown sugar.
The total estimated open market value of the seized contraband is around 3 crores. It is suspected that the consignment was being prepared for smuggling across the border into Bangladesh.
