TURA, April 27: A colorful felicitation programme was held for Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and new Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma on Thursday in Tura district auditorium by the National People’s Party from West Garo Hills.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Speaker Thomas A Sangma were honoured with a presentation that included a traditional garo jacket, among others. The Garo Hills NPP unit also handed over a citation to the chief minister and the Speaker.

Appreciating the gesture, the chief minister thanked the voters of Tura for electing him for the second term. He also told the gathering that the NPP led Govt is committed to the overall development of the State.

Mentioning about the 2023 elections which the NPP swept in the state, particularly Garo Hills, Conrad Sangma said that this election was remarkable in many ways as people of the State had given decisive mandate to the NPP.

He said that winning 18 seats out of a combined 24 in Garo Hills was a record of sorts and something never witnessed before which, he added, was because people were convinced that it is only the NPP that can deliver development.

It was also the first time in many decades that sitting MLAs in most seats, particularly Tura, were re-elected by the people.

“Seldom do u find MLAs getting re-elected but this election was totally different. People of Tura voted back both sitting legislators for North and South Tura, including me, allowing us to continue our work for the people,” said Conrad Sangma.

The new Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly, Thomas K Sangma, expressed his gratitude to the electorates of North Tura and also thanked the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for giving him the responsibility to lead the Assembly as its speaker.

He recalled the days spent working under NPP founder Late Purno A Sangma and assured that as the new speaker of Meghalaya Assembly, he will always work to ensure the decorum of the house is maintained.

During the felicitation a multitude of cultural events, including traditional songs were sung and gifts by different communities residing in Garo Hills were handed over to the chief minister and the new speaker.
