Shillong, Mar 24: The National People’s Party (NPP) national president and Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday informed that the party has extended its full support to the Biren Singh-led BJP government in Manipur.
It is pertinent to mention here that NPP was a coalition partner of the BJP along with NPF in the last Manipur government. However, after the BJP managed to secure an absolute majority of 32 seats in the 60-member Manipur Assembly in the recently concluded assembly elections, the saffron party gave a snub to its former ally which emerged as the second largest party with 7 seats. Although, BJP took in NPF as its partner in the incumbent government.
Speaking to reporters here, Sangma said the NPP MLAs have decided to support the Biren Singh-led government in Manipur following the discussion held with the Manipur Chief Minister and the party’s central leadership.
This was after a general consensus was built up that the NPP being a party which is supporting the NDA government at the centre and also being a member of the NEDA, it will be in the right spirit to support the government that is there, he said.
Stating that there was nothing wrong in the relationship of the NPP and the BJP, the NPP chief said, “When we contest elections we contest on our terms and once we move forward in coalition and government formation that is a different story. Therefore, the MLAs sat down, they discussed, we sent from the central leadership of the party, they went and discussed with the MLAs. After that was done the very next day the letter of support was given so, therefore, it is a process that has to be followed and as a party.”
