Must read

Dimapur, May 11: The National People’s Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, will contest the upcoming urban local body elections in Nagaland, where the party is currently an ally in the state government.

This was announced during a press conference of NPP Nagaland state unit held in Dimapur on May 10. NPP national secretary (organization) James Sangma was present in the press meet. He informed reporters that the party would field candidates in constituencies where it currently has legislators in the Nagaland assembly.

He added that the NPP, which has five MLAs supporting the Neiphiu Rio-led People’s Democratic Alliance Government in Nagaland, also plans to nominate candidates in other civic bodies based on the demand and response from the people. Discussions are ongoing regarding whether the NPP will contest the elections independently or in alliance with other parties.

Sangma emphasized that the NPP’s support for the Rio Government is issue-based, focusing on ushering in development and bringing change to the State. “We do not want to be an impediment to the efforts of the Nagaland Government in its development efforts and resolution of issues,” he stated.

The party leader welcomed women candidates to contest the civic body polls, clarifying that the allotment of tickets would depend on the number of applications received from them. Sangma further highlighted that the NPP’s focus would be on introducing innovation and new thoughts in the management of the State’s civic bodies.

NPP’s Nagaland unit president, A Nyamnyei Konyak along with other party leaders were present during the press meet. The elections for the three municipal councils and 36 town councils in Nagaland are scheduled to take place on June 26.
