Ampati, April 9: It was a sight never witnessed before by any opposition party to the Congress in Ampati- the once indomitable bastion of Mukul Sangma and his family, but Friday evening’s turnout at an election Rally of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has done the unthinkable.
One of the largest crowds in an MDC election campaign, that too in Ampati, gathered at the Ampati grounds to hear the chief of the NPP as he tore into the ‘development’ claims of Mukul Sangma and the Congress.
“People from across Garo Hills have come forward to show their support for the NPP because we have proved our commitment to listen and act on the grievances of the people and ensure a better life for them. This turnout has proved beyond doubt that the NPP wave is strong and we are confident of winning 20 seats in this election,” a confident Conrad K Sangma said as the crowds cheered him on.
Organisers of the rally are jubilant over the massive turnout which was beyond their expectations. “Never have we seen such a mighty show of strength by any party opposed to the Congress in a stronghold like Ampati. This rally has been attended by over 8000 people which is clearly a show of strength for a party in what was long claimed to be Mukul Sangma’s stronghold,” state NPP organizers.
The mammoth turnout has revealed that the NPP election machine has penetrated the Congress turf and asserted itself to be a new force to be recknowed with.
We are on #Congress home turf at #Ampati but the NPP aura is strong!

The Chief Minister paraded all the five NPP candidates from the district from the five constituencies – Premish Sangma from Betasing, Thebarson Arengh from Boldamgre, Premanando Koch from Zikzak, Sanjib T Sangma from Dengnakpara and Lenikar K Sangma from Nogorpara as thousands of supporters clapped and waved NPP flags.
“Our party- the NPP, started with humble beginnings as a home grown party of our people but in a very short span of time, it has been listed as a national party. In India, we have over 200 political parties but only 7 are classified as national parties. We should be proud and further come together to make NPP stronger”, appealed Conrad Sangma.
Taking on Mukul Sangma for his claims of development of the GHADC during the Congress rule, Conrad demanded a white paper.
“The Congress has governed GHADC for over 20 long years but where were the reforms and development. Why has the council been left in such a terrible mess. Today they are promising everything after losing people’s trust. Why did they not take the necessary step when they had all the power and might?” questioned the chief minister as he accused the Congress of opposing anything and everything when it came to reforms in the GHADC merely because it is the NPP which has begun the process to bring in lasting development.
