Shillong, Nov 2: The National People’s Party (NPP) has won the bye-election for Mawryngkneng Assembly with its candidate Pyniaid Sing Syiem securing a total of 14,177 votes at the end of counting of votes – from EVM Votes and Postal Ballots – for the constituency on Tuesday. He defeated his nearest rival Highlander Kharmalki of Congress with a margin of 1816 votes.
Kharmalki secured 12,361 votes.
The fight between Syiem and Kharmalki was a close one till about 6th round as at one point the later was closing-in the margin quite fast and people needed to wait for counting of all the rounds to be over to be completely certain of the winner.
Mentionably, Syiem is also the sitting KHADC MDC from the Sohryngkham, which is located inside the Mawryngkneng constituency.
Mawryngkneng Assembly constituency has about 36,751 voters, of which about 75% people voted in the bye-election held on October 30.
Interestingly, the NOTA option (None of the Above) has so far been used 238 times, which is more than the votes of independent candidate Arbiangkam Kharsohmat who has secured 214 votes.
Independent candidate Norbert Marboh secured the third position with 1,400 votes and independent candidate came in fourth spot with 485 votes.
