Boko, Aug 31: Oil India FC from Duliajan emerged victorious in the 40th Swahid Trophy Invited Football Tournament, defeating Kamrupa FC 3-0 in the final held at the Janata Sangha playground in Bondapara, Boko on Friday evening.
Munindra Daimary, former secretary of the tournament, confirmed that the event is officially recognized by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
The tournament, organized by Janata Sangha in collaboration with the Purnamal Jain Foundation, was inaugurated by Guwahati MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi. Rahul Das of Oil India FC was named the best player of the tournament. The champion team received the trophy from Shanti Kumar Jain, while Dibas Bordoloi presented the runners-up trophy. Janata Sangha president Ranjit Das awarded the best player trophy.
Prior to the final, former footballers Bhabaniprasad Das and Rajnikant Rabha, along with former referees Tajmahal Hussain and Ashok Das, were honored. The tournament began on August 21, featuring eight teams, including seven from Assam and one from Meghalaya.
The participating teams were ASEB FC Guwahati, Eleven Star Club from Bongaigaon, Oil India FC from Duliajan, Rebels United FC from Baksa, Barmwdai FC from Goalpara, MASA FC from Nalbari, Kamrupa FC from Kamrup, and Khlieh Mawlieh FC from Nongstoin, Meghalaya.
Ranjit Das, President of Janata Sangha, noted that the tournament is held annually in memory of the martyrs of the Assam movement. The final match drew an impressive crowd of over 5,000 spectators.
