DIBRUGARH, Jan 12: Oil India FC emerged victorious in the grand finale of the 20th Captain Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra Memorial Football Tournament, defeating Assam Rifles Training Centre Team in a thrilling contest at Nehru Stadium, Duliajan, on Saturday evening.

The champions clinched the title and a cash prize of ₹5,50,000, while the runners-up received ₹3,50,000. The tournament finale marked the culmination of intense competition and celebrated the legacy of Capt Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra, with a grand closing ceremony featuring cultural and martial displays, inspiring messages, and a spectacular showcase of Indian Army’s valor and unity in diversity.

The 20th edition of the Captain Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra Memorial Football Tournament concluded in spectacular fashion at Nehru Stadium, Duliajan, on Saturday evening, with a grand ceremony that honored the legacy of Capt Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra, and celebrated the spirit of unity in diversity.

The closing ceremony paid homage to Captain Gogoi’s valour and showcased the Indian Army’s ethos through a vibrant display of martial arts and cultural performances. Highlights included Punjab’s martial art Gatka, the Khukri Dance symbolizing the Gurkhas’ bravery, and Southern India’s Kalaripayattu and Silambam. Traditional dances like the graceful Bihu and the energetic Bhangra added to the cultural grandeur.

The event also featured breathtaking demonstrations, including a Combat Free Fall, an awe-inspiring flypast by Indian Army helicopters, and a dramatic low-hover jump by Army soldiers. A thrilling combat dog show and a stirring pipe band performance further captivated the audience.

The semi-finals saw intense competition, with Assam Rifles defeating Tea Sports Academy FC 1-0 and Oil India FC overcoming Barekuri FC 2-0. Individual accolades included the Golden Gloves award to Arup Boruah of Oil India FC, the Golden Boot to Akrang Narzary for scoring the most goals, and the Player of the Tournament to J Nungrud of Assam Rifles Training Centre Team.

Lieutenant General Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding, Spear Corps, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, along with the GOC, Red Shield Division. In a poignant moment, the General felicitated Captain Jintu Gogoi’s parents, paying tribute to their son’s heroic deeds during the 1999 Kargil War.

Addressing the audience, Lt. Gen. Pendharkar lauded the tournament’s success, emphasizing the Indian Army’s efforts to promote development, peace, and empowerment in Upper Assam.

The Captain Jintu Gogoi Memorial Football Tournament continues to serve as a beacon of hope for Assam’s youth, fostering camaraderie, sportsmanship, and fitness while uncovering and nurturing local talent.
