Agartala, May 15: State-owned Oil India Limited (OIL) has launched its exploration and production operations in Tripura by spudding its first well, Debtamura-1, in the Gomati district. The well, located within the Baramura-Debtamura Reserve Forest near the India-Bangladesh border, marks the first such initiative in the state under the Government of India’s Hydrocarbon Exploration and Licensing Policy (HELP) regime.
Rupjyoti Phukan, Resident Chief Executive of OIL, along with senior company officials, attended the ceremonial spudding on Sunday at the site, approximately 120 km from Agartala.

Calling it a landmark development in Tripura’s hydrocarbon landscape, OIL officials emphasized that the Debtamura-1 well represents a significant step forward for energy exploration in the region. The project, however, comes with substantial logistical and environmental challenges, including dense forest cover, rugged terrain, and narrow hilly roads with sharp curves.
Despite these hurdles, OIL remains committed to advancing its operations, aiming to unlock the region’s untapped hydrocarbon potential.
