Gangtok, July 28: In a major gubernatorial reshuffle by the President of India, Om Prakash Mathur has been appointed as the new Governor of Sikkim.
Mathur, a former Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan, currently holds the position of national vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He also served as the State BJP President of Rajasthan from 2008 to 2014.
Hailing from Bali in Rajasthan, Mathur was mentored by the former Vice President of India, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. The 72-year-old has a rich background, having served as a Pracharak with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and as the general secretary in-charge of Gujarat BJP.
The outgoing Governor of Sikkim, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, has been reassigned as the Governor of Assam. Additionally, Acharya will take on the extra responsibility of governing the state of Manipur.
