Sikkim, May 27: One person was killed and ten others were injured in various degrees when their taxi collided with a truck near Tarkhola, around 10 km towards Rangpo on Monday.
The mishap occurred when the taxi, travelling from Jorethang to Gangtok, collided with the truck moving towards Siliguri at Tarkhola stretch of NH 10 under Kalimpong district at around noon.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported of a loud crash, followed by immediate chaos as other commuters rushed to assist the victims. Local authorities were quick to respond, dispatching emergency services to the site of the accident.
The deceased was identified a resident of Tharpu, West Sikkim. The injured passengers were rushed to the nearby Rangpo PHC and among them, some of the victims have been referred to STNM Hospital in Gangtok for further treatment.
Authorities have begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. Preliminary reports suggest that weather conditions and road visibility will be examined as potential factors.
The fatal accident has left the local community in shock, with many expressing concern over road safety in the area. Tarkhola and its surroundings have seen an increase in traffic, and residents are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent future incidents.
