One dead several injured as landslides, flash floods ravage Garo Hills; SDRF launches rescue ops

A fatal landslide struck Koinadubi in Dalu at approximately 7:30-8:00 AM, taking the life of 57-year-old Santa N. Marak. Her daughter, 28-year-old Moralistic N. Narak, was injured and has been admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Dalu. The two were working in their kitchen when the landslip occurred without warning.

In response, local authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate. The District Commissioner of West Garo Hills has called for additional support from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), while the SDRF remains active in ongoing rescue and relief efforts.

Elsewhere, the NHIDCL and PWD (R) have cleared the Dalu-Tura National Highway, restoring access to some affected regions. However, landslides continue to occur, including one near Lt. Clement Marak’s house on Jerusalem Road, where several people were trapped in a food stall. Thanks to quick action from the SDRF and State Response Teams (SRT), all trapped individuals were rescued.

Among them, Parcella A. Sangma sustained a leg fracture, while her husband, Dhurbo Newar, and son, Fredrick A. Sangma, suffered minor injuries. They were later transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Widespread damage has been reported in areas like Reserve Gittim, Modoltila, Rishipara, Hawakhana, Sweeper Colony, Kamipara, Sunny Hills, Matchikolgre, Akonggre, and other localities, which are still under assessment by teams from the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).
