Mairang, March 2: Violence erupted in Mairang as an angry mob started pelting stones and burnt several cars outside the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office in Mairang in Eastern West Khasi Hills, soon after the counting of votes for the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly elections got over on Thursday evening. Atleast one person has died in ensuing violence and vandalism.
The incident occurred after the announcement of the vote count, which left many individuals dissatisfied, as they alleged electoral fraud.
According to reports, the mob, consisting of supporters of the Indian National Congress (INC), started gathering outside the DC office. The announcement, which declared UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh as the winner, was met with disbelief and anger by the supporters of the INC party, who accused the RO of not announcing the correct result.
The situation quickly escalated, and the mob started pelting stones and setting fire to vehicles parked outside the DC office. The police were called in to control the situation, who had to open fire at the angry Congress supporters.
Section 144 CrPc has been imposed in the entire Eastern West Khasi Hills District.
Official report on the cause of death of the individual is yet to be acquired.
