Agartala, Apr 4: In a tragic incident, one person was killed and another critically injured after Border Security Force(BSF) personnel fired at them after suspecting them as smuggler.
The incident happened on Wednesday night at Nutanbari under Durgapur in bordering Sepahijala district.
Superintendent of Police B.J. Reddy said that the incident happened between 9 PM to 9.30 PM when BSF jawans intervened to prevent alleged smuggling attempts across the India-Bangladesh border. A group of locals reportedly surrounded the jawans, leading to heated arguments and scuffles.
The SP said the BSF jawans opened fire in self-defense.
The deceased identified as Shahid Mia and the injured identified as Kabil Hussain, both residents of Durgapur village were rushed to Sonamura hospital.
Speaking to reporters, the deceased brother denied any involvement of his brother Sahid Mia with any smuggling activities.
He said that he was sitting outside his house after offering Namaz when the BSF guards thought him as smuggler and opened fire.
