One-Time Settlement scheme getting popular, says Power Minister

Must read

Shillong, March 19: Power Minister AT Mondal said the One-Time Settlement (OTS) Scheme will gain more traction over time.

He highlighted its growing popularity among consumers, particularly those with power connections below 5 kW. The scheme aims to provide financial relief and facilitate the settlement of outstanding electricity dues.

When asked about the estimated benefits of the scheme, Mondal stated, “The total amount is around ₹119 crores, with a rebate of approximately ₹25 crores. The remaining ₹94 crores represent the financial benefit we are targeting. We have specifically focused on the lowest category of consumers—those with a load capacity of up to 5 kW, but not beyond that.”

Responding to concerns about whether the scheme would result in financial losses for MeECL, Mondal acknowledged, “If you look at it that way, yes, it is a loss. If bills had been paid on time, we wouldn’t have to forgo this amount. However, we believe this category of consumers deserves some consideration. That’s why MeECL has made the effort to provide this opportunity.”

Regarding public response, he added, “As of now, we don’t have exact figures on how many people have come forward. But on the launch day, many people lined up. It looks like the scheme will gain more traction over time.
