Dibrugarh, Apr 28: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday confirmed that only one Pakistani citizen has been identified in the state, residing in Tinsukia district after marrying a local resident.
Speaking to reporters in Dibrugarh, Sarma said, “We have only one Pakistani citizen in Tinsukia district, and she has married a local citizen. She has applied for a long-term visa. We have requested the Government of India to clarify whether she should be sent back or not. That is the only case; otherwise, we don’t have any Pakistani citizens in Assam.”
Sarma also commented on broader security concerns, stating that India should adopt a tough stance towards Bangladesh as well.

“India should take tough action against Bangladesh also, but these are strategic decisions. We should not go beyond a point. As a Chief Minister, we can request, but the decision will be taken by the Government of India after considering all security aspects — whether to act against Pakistan and Bangladesh simultaneously or one at a time,” he said.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid the Centre’s strict directive for Pakistani nationals to leave India, following a deadly terror attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. The attack, linked to Pakistani terrorists, prompted the government to issue ‘Leave India’ notices to Pakistani citizens.
Under the new Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 — effective from April 4 — any Pakistani national overstaying, violating visa conditions, or entering restricted areas could face up to three years in jail, a fine of up to ₹3 lakh, or both. Pakistani nationals holding SAARC visas were ordered to leave by April 26, while those with medical visas have until April 29. The order applies to 12 visa categories, including business, student, journalist, and pilgrim visas.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah took immediate steps by directing all Chief Ministers to ensure no Pakistani citizen overstays the deadline. Following his instructions, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan held a video conference with state Chief Secretaries to oversee compliance.
