Shillong, Nov 11: The overall tally of arrested operatives of ULFA(I) in ongoing operation named ‘Operation Crackdown’ has reached 16 people with two more nabbed in the latest operation on Monday.

Led by Satyaraj Hazarika, Inspector General of Police (North East Region) of Assam Police, this multi-agency operation that also involves Military Intelligence (Kolkata based) and Assam Rifles seeks to dismantle the insurgent network in the region.

On Monday, a joint operation involving Assam Police, Military Intelligence and 24 Assam Rifles was launched in general area Kanubari, located near the Assam-Nagaland border, which resulted in apprehension of two Over Ground Workers (OGW), identified as Hemanta Mohan (25), son of Hiteswar Mohan of Tengapukhuri Mohangaon, and Raju Dey (27), son of Kukun Dey of Belengbari Gaon, both from Charaideo District.

During the investigation, it was found that both individuals have close contact with an individual known as Wangpen (alias Ranapio) from Tiru village, who is allegedly connected to self-styled Brigadier Ganesh Lahon of ULFA(I).

To date, Operation Crackdown has led to the apprehension of 16 OGWs and two active cadres associated with ULFA (I).

Operation Crackdown has been ongoing since October 25 with Assam Police (NER/ER) and Military Intelligence (Kolkata based) as the primary forces involved in it. Sources said the operation is ongoing, with security forces aiming to dismantle the remaining ULFA (I) network operating within Upper Assam.

They have emphasized the importance of this operation in countering insurgent threats, particularly in light of potential IED attacks planned for upcoming dates such as ULFA(I)’s Protest Day on November 28, and Republic Day on January 26, 2025.
