Guwahati, May 7: In a swift and symbolic response to the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead, India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, a coordinated tri-service military strike targeting nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The government described the overnight action as a “measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and responsible” response to continued cross-border terrorism.
The retaliatory strike began at 1:05 am on May 6 and concluded within 25 minutes. No official figures were revealed on the casualties inflicted by the strike.
Targets were hit using high-precision, stand-off munitions including the HAMMER bomb and the SCALP missile, weapons capable of confirming and engaging targets with minimal risk to civilians. The strikes were synchronised across services to avoid early detection and maximise impact.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, addressing a press briefing Wednesday morning, said the targets were chosen based on credible intelligence inputs and were aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure and neutralising operatives responsible for repeated incursions and attacks on Indian soil.
The strike, Misri noted, was India’s first tri-service operation since the 1971 war with Pakistan, and affirms the country’s right to act against threats emanating from across the border. “The Pahalgam attack was marked by extreme barbarity… with victims mostly killed by headshots, and in front of their families,” he said, calling it an effort to derail the return of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir following the 2019 abrogation of Article 370.

Women officers Colonel Sofiya Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh provided operational details, confirming that the terror camps had clear links to Pakistan-based groups, including Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen. These included the Muridke camp, associated with the training of 26/11 Mumbai attackers Ajmal Kasab and David Headley, and Bahawalpur, the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed.
Other targeted camps included:
Sawai Nala and Syedna Bilal (Muzaffarabad and PoK) — Lashkar and Jaish strongholds
Gulpur — linked to recent attacks in Rajouri and Poonch
Sarjal, Barnala, and Mehmoona (near Sialkot) — used for training and infiltration, including Hizbul Mujahideen operatives
