Orientation on Juvenile Justice held in Tura

Tura, July 30: In order to provide a better justice delivery system for offences under Juveniles Justice, a one Day Orientation programme on Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 was held at District and Sessions Court, Tura on Tuesday.

The programme was organized by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), West Garo Hills, Tura.

Highlighting the importance of the Act, the District and Session Judge, Chairperson, DLSA, Tura, A M Ripnar, said that the Act which is meant to cater to the basic needs through proper care, protection, treatment, rehabilitation, etc in the best interest of children in conflict with law should be implemented in right earnest as per the provisions of the law.

During the day long programme, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Dadenggre, Ishan Gupta, highlighted about the “Roles and Responsibilities of Police Personnel” and also explained in detail about the “Procedures for apprehension and handling of children in conflict with law”, “Coordination with Juvenile Justice Board and Child Welfare Committee”, “Rights of Children and ethical consideration” and “Preventive measures and community policing strategies”.

Further, the Senior Medical and Health Officer, West Garo Hills, Dr. Angelice A Sangma, emphasized on the roles and responsibilities of medical officers in relation to age determination, medical examination, psychological assessment and ethical consideration.

Judicial Magistrate First Class, Principal Magistrate, Juvenile Justice Board, L M Rymbai, delivered on the ‘roles of juvenile justice board and legal procedures’. The District Child Protection Unit, Tura, Walsmi R Marak, informed the gathering about the ‘Roles and Responsibilities of Child Welfare Committee’ including the procedures for handling cases of children in care and protection, Coordinating with other stakeholders including police, NGO and Juvenile Justice Board, Ensuring the Rights and best interest of the children and upheld and rehabilitation and reintegration strategies for children.

Ld Secretary, DLSA, Tura, Ishana R Marak were among others who spoke on the occasion.

Panel Lawyers, Board Members of Juvenile Justice Board, Special Juvenile Police Unit, Police Personnel, Probation Officer, Doctors and Para Legal Volunteers attended the orientation programme.
