Guwahati, July 4: As many as 16.25 lakh people were affected in floods with eight more people losing their lives in the devastation.
The death toll rose to 46 in Assam floods till Wednesday.
As on Wednesday evening, a total population of 16.25 lakh across 2800 villages in 29 districts have been affected by the floods.
The worst affected districts in the state are Nagaon and Darrang in Central Assam and Karimganj in the Barak valley.
The first wave of floods in May was not as devastating as the second that started on June 16.
Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday visited Dibrugarh and took stock of the flood situation and waterlogging problem.
Due to rising Brahmaputra flood, safety alert have been issued for Guwahati residents.
The worst-hit district, Dhubri, has seen 2,23,210 people affected, followed closely by Darrang with 1,83,738 people and Lakhimpur with 1,66,063 affected individuals.
The flood waters have inundated 2800 villages under 105 revenue circles, affecting a staggering 3.86 lakh people who are now seeking shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centers.
Rescue operations by NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, and other agencies have been actively underway, with 8,377 people rescued in the past 24 hours alone.
On the other hand, incessant rainfall has caused severe flooding at several places in Manipur’s Imphal West and Imphal East districts, after two major rivers breached embankments.
Following the flooding in several areas, the state government has declared a holiday for all government offices on Wednesday, while schools will remain closed till Thursday.
The state government has set up a 24X7 control room with a view to improving coordination in rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts and swiftly addressing the requirements of the police affected by incessant rains and floods, landslides etc.
