Tura, April 10: In a first for Garo Hills, a two-day awareness camp on sports climbing and mountaineering held at P.A. Sangma Stadium in Dakopgre, Tura.
Starting today, the event saw participation from over 80 students representing various schools across Tura.
The camp is being led by a four-member expert team from the Meghalaya Sports Climbing and Mountaineering Association, Shillong. The sessions include practical training on climbing, rappelling, and familiarisation with mountaineering equipment. The interactive sessions also provided students with first-hand knowledge and exposure to adventure sports.
What took the experts by surprise was the natural flair and enthusiasm shown by the students on the very first day. Despite no prior training, several students showcased impressive climbing skills, drawing praise from the instructors.
Teachers accompanying the students expressed joy and pride, watching their students perform with confidence and agility. District Sports Officer (DSO) Saljagring M. Marak shared his excitement about the event, saying, “This is the first of its kind camp here in Garo Hills. The students are learning quickly and showing great interest. I believe Garo Hills can produce international-level athletes in this sport.”

While a district-level club for rock climbing and mountaineering is yet to be established in Garo Hills, Marak stated that steps are underway to form one under the mentorship of Wallambok Lyngdoh, the General Secretary of the Meghalaya Sports Climbing and Mountaineering Association.
Lyngdoh, who is spearheading the camp, is a seasoned instructor with experience training Indian Army personnel, including at the challenging Siachen Glacier. His presence has added significant value to the camp, inspiring both students and teachers alike.
The awareness camp was organised by the District Sports Office, Tura, in collaboration with the District Administration and the Meghalaya Sports Climbing and Mountaineering Association.
