Williamnagar, April 20: For the first time in history, the banks of Simsang River at Nokgil A•we echoed with energy and excitement as over 80 young participants between the ages of 12 and 16 years dived into the thrilling world of kayaking.
This Kayaking Awareness Programme was organized by the East Garo Hills District Sports Office in collaboration with the Meghalaya Canoe Association (MCA).
The programme was led under the leadership of District Sports Officer Babira G. Momin and her dedicated team. With the vision of promoting water sports and identifying hidden talents in the region, the event aimed to prepare local youth for national and even Olympic-level participation in the future.
Expert guidance was provided by Coach Ian Vincent, along with MCA President W. Manners, Secretary Sheela Vincent, and other members.
As part of the programme, three national medalists in kayaking were also felicitated, inspiring the young participants with their achievements and demonstrating the heights that dedication to the sport can reach.
The event included both theoretical sessions and hands-on training, ensuring a holistic introduction to the sport for the young enthusiasts.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Subir Sangma, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, lauded the effort and encouraged the youth to take sports seriously. “This is a historic moment for Williamnagar. Everyone who participated today has made history. I’m amazed at how well they performed in such a short training period,” he remarked.
MCA President W. Manners expressed his gratitude to the District Sports Officer for creating this opportunity, and motivated the children to pursue kayaking seriously and make the most of such rare platforms.
The programme concluded with a friendly kayaking competition, where participants showcased their newfound skills. Winners were felicitated with awards, adding a competitive spark to the already vibrant event.

Speaking exclusively to Hub News, Coach Ian Vincent praised the local youth. “The children here are exceptional. Most of them are familiar with water and know how to swim. They’re naturally suited for kayaking, and I believe this programme was a huge success,” he remarked.
This pioneering initiative not only introduced kayaking to East Garo Hills but also stirred the waters of change, promising a brighter future for water sports in the region.
